Hello World!
Hi there, folks!
Recently, I've felt the bug to develop an RPG for the C64, something along the lines of the Gold Box SSI games. I'd really like some pointers as to the best methods on programming it. If I have to, I'll make it text(that's actually a brilliant idea for a demo, at least), but I'd ideally like it to have graphics. The scale of this probably wouldn't fit on a single disk, yet I'm still excited to tackle the challenge. If you know anyone willing to assist, please, I'm all ears!
Sounds like an excellent idea!
I would start with a rogue-like/dungeon delve as it gives you a lot of what you will need to cover in a larger game but with less overwhelming scope.
On the C64 you can use text that BECOME graphics! With the magic of PETSCII you can use @ etc and then redefine them, and even add sprites later.
Here is a starting point for you in basic but I also have C examples etc :)

I've also been following your tutorials on YouTube! I used the code that you put as an example for the v2 Character Generator, but it only returned a "READY" when compiled. I didn't notice any errors in the code, nor did the RDE find any, but I can't figure out what went wrong, unless the example wasn't a completed code? I'm still going through it no matter what, and I'm excited to take this journey!
Daniel Stull Did the character generator writes to disk? I need to look it up and see what it does ...
Chris Garrett With the return of the program only giving out an output of "READY," I'm not sure what's wrong with it.
